PATJENS LAKES - MT. WASHINGTON WILDERNESS
Easy
6 mile loop
400 feet elevation
gain
These lakes are well hidden in the high lodge pole pine
forests south of Hoodoo off the Santiam Pass. These 3 lakes mirror the jagged Mt.
Washington. Hikers will also pass by a remote beach of Big Lake where those who
want a refreshing dip, may do so. The trail gradually descends through a dry
forest where you may see blooming bear grass and lupine. We then start to climb
through a small pass where careful observers can catch a glimpse of Sand
Mountain and it’s double hump of red cinders. The rest of the hike we will
descend through meadows where we might see some stalks of scarlet gilia. Views
of Mt. Washington, Belknap Crater, the Three Sisters, The Husband, and Scott
Mountain will inspire that perfect picture. Patjens Lakes is made up of three
lakes. The first lake is pond sized, the second is slightly larger with a bushy
shore. The third lake is surrounded by meadow and is a great place for the
llamas to browse and for us to set-up our picnic lunch. This lake is big enough
for wading and cooling off. On the trek back we will come to a sandy beach at
Big Lake. In the mid to late summer it is warm enough to take a swim. Here you
can see across Big Lake to Hayrick Butte. Lots of photo opportunities on this
hike. Don’t forget your camera!
